چکیده

In order to determine the therapeutic value of penicillins in the management of anaerobic infections caused by Bacteroides fragilis, the antibacterial activity of penicillin G, ampicillin, and carbenicillin against 10 strains of B. fragilis subsp. fragilis, isolated from clinical material, was studied. This was undertaken by using a triple-layer technique, enzymatic inactivation of the antibiotics, and an automatic colony counter, which allowed a quantitative and a qualitative approach to the problem. Results indicated in vitro bactericidal activity with 40 ,

Susceptibility of anaerobic bacteria to ten antimicrobial agents.

The susceptibility pattern of 265 anaerobic bacteria from clinical isolates to 10 antimicrobial agents was investigated by the agar dilution technique. Penicillin G, in a concentration of 16 mug/ml, was active against most organisms, important exceptions being 12% of Bacteroides melaninogenicus and 24% of B. fragilis strains. The susceptibility of strains to ampicillin was similar to their susc...

Comparison of the inoculum effect of cefoxitin and other cephalosporins and of beta-lactamase inhibitors and their penicillin-derived components on the Bacteroides fragilis group.

We compared the inoculum effects for 109 recent clinical isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group of cefoxitin, cefotetan, ceftizoxime, ceftriaxone, and three beta-lactamase inhibitors (clavulanic acid, sulbactam, and tazobactam) and their penicillin-derived components. Bactericidal activity was assayed and morphologic changes were monitored for selected strains exhibiting a large inoculum ef...

Comparison of moxalactam (LY127935) and cefotaxime against anaerobic bacteria.

The in vitro activities of moxalactam (LY127935 [6059S]) and cefotaxime were compared with those of cefoxitin, cefamandole, cefuroxime, carbenicillin, and penicillin by agar dilution susceptibility testing of a variety of anaerobic bacteria. Moxalactam proved to be the most active agent tested against Bacteroides fragilis and other species of the B. fragilis group. Moxalactam and cefotaxime sho...

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of anaerobic bacteria: recent clinical isolates.

Minimal inhibitory concentrations of clindamycin, minocycline, metronidazole, penicillin, and carbenicillin were determined by agar dilution against 150 recent clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria. Ninety-nine percent of Bacteroides fragilis and all B. melaninogenicus, Clostridium perfringens, and Fusobacterium were inhibited by clindamycin at 3.1 mug/ml. Only 58% of other clostridial specie...
